Started in 1978, Norwescon is an annual four-day convention for fans of sci-fi and fantasy-type books, comics and gaming. While the primary focus of this convention is on literary works, it also offers guests an opportunity to explore a variety of sci-fi and fantasy game types including card, table-top and war games using miniatures. Fannish Fetish Fashion Night and Masquerade Night are other favorites of Norwescon attendees, as you can dress in your own fetish-themed creations one night, and your favorite gaming costume the next. Guests can also dance the night away to popular music spun by DJs during the first three convention nights.
Since 1998, Sakura-Con has been the largest annual anime convention in the Pacific Northwest. Anime consists of Japanese animation comics, cartoons, movies and games. Guests of Sakura-Con arrive dressed as their favorite anime or manga character and have meet-and-greet sessions with celebrity guests such as directors, voice-over actors and artists. Attendees can also preview anime movie screenings, sing karaoke, enter a fashion show and participate in cosplay contests. There will also be Japanese pop music artists holding live performances each day of the three-day convention.
Crypticon is an annual horror-themed convention that originated in Seattle in 2008 and has since expanded to the cities of Minneapolis and Kansas City. Every year, thousands of horror fans turn out for this well-received three-day convention as it is the only one of its kind in the Seattle area. Crypticon is divided into three main sections: the movie screening area, the panel auditorium and the vendor area where horror-related merchandise is sold. Attendees can screen a variety of horror movies throughout the convention’s three days, and cast members involved with the film are usually on hand to introduce the movie, as well as participate in a question-and-answer session afterward. The auditorium is also set up for panels of celebrities who may star, direct or write for certain shows or movies, such as “The Walking Dead,” “Friday the 13th” and others.
PAX (Penny Arcade Expo) Prime is Seattle’s annual gaming convention that caters to gamers of all kinds including computer gaming, console gaming, tabletop gaming and more. In 2013, PAX Prime will host its first four-day convention. The past 9 years, the convention has only been a three-day event. PAX Prime receives more than 60,000 attendees per year to game, participate in panel discussions, learn about new and upcoming games and compete in grand prize gaming challenges.
